Columbus Mourns the Loss of Educator and Advocate Sara Bennett at 37

The Columbus community is mourning the loss of Sara Bennett, a devoted mother, passionate educator, and tireless advocate, who passed away at age 37 after a courageous battle with ALS.

Sara was a loving mother to two young sons, ages 5 and 7, and shared a joyful life with her husband, Rusty, and their dog, Grif. Known for her warmth and compassion, she created a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support for her family.

Before her diagnosis, Sara spent 15 years as a high school Social Studies teacher, inspiring students as a mentor, club advisor, and swim coach. She also served on the board of a suicide-prevention nonprofit and ran a small organizing business, reflecting her lifelong commitment to helping others.

Diagnosed with ALS in March 2023, Sara faced the disease with remarkable strength and grace. Even as her health declined, she maintained a deep gratitude for life. In a final reflection shared on social media, she wrote, “I loved this life, and am grateful for the time.”

Sara Bennett leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and service. She will be deeply missed by her family, students, colleagues, and a community forever touched by her generosity and spirit.
